What is an endowment fund?
An endowment fund is a specific type of fund within a regular 501(c)(3) nonprofit, designed for long-term financial stability by preserving the principal and spending only its investment earnings, while a "regular" 501(c)(3) refers to the organization itself, which can have various non-endowed funds that are fully spendable for immediate operations or programs, unlike the perpetual nature of an endowment. In the case of SJFNC, this financial approach ensures the annual distribution of much needed grants to well-vetted educational programs catering to individuals of all ages. By doing so, the SJFNC ensures that our community will have a dependable source of funding for projects that result in a better-trained local workforce.
Why do we need another charitable organization in St. James Plantation?
Other charitable organizations within St. James raise and typically distribute funds within the same year to meet immediate needs. In contrast, the SJFNC makes careful investments of the donations to generate sustainable, long-term income. The principal is preserved, and only investment earnings are distributed annually. This endowment model provides reliable, ongoing funding rather than one-time support and allows donors to create a lasting charitable legacy. Within St. James Plantation, this permanent fund structure is unique to SJFNC.
